Q&A With the 2011 NiSWC Champion Ray Alfalla

Nine months ago, fifty drivers set out with a goal: to win the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship and the title of best oval sim racer in the world, not to mention more than $10,500 worth of cash and prizes. With consistency the key, Ray Alfalla rose above the rest of the field to claim the title a fortnight ago with a run to second place at Phoenix International Raceway.  Heading into tonight’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Alfalla has not only matched Brad Davies for most wins this season (three), week-in and week-out he has kept his nose clean and constantly finished at the front of the field.

I had the pleasure of sitting down for a chat with Ray after he clinched to find out more about what the championship means to him and his life outside of sim racing.

Q:     Not to start out with the obvious but it’s the one question everyone wants to know. How does it feel to be the 2011 NiSWC champion?

A:     It feels unreal.  I was hoping to be a contender this year, but never thought things would go so smoothly.  From the win at Daytona, the season had amazing flow and I was able to bring home good finishes almost every week.

Gorlinsky’s Homestead Win Wraps-up 2011 NiSWC Season

John Gorlinsky might not be the 2011 champion of the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship, but the veteran sim racer locked-up the runner-up spot in the championship with a dominating performance at Homestead-Miami Speedway last night. Gorlinsky grabbed the pole position and was never seriously challenged the whole night, leading all but a few laps during the cycle of green flag pit stops. Thomas Hazard gave a valiant effort in an attempt to hang onto the second spot in the championship, but came up just 11 points short with his eighth place effort.

There were many other spots up for grabs during the final race of the season as well. The top 12 is the cutoff for championship winnings while the top 25 in the standings qualify for an automatic berth in the 2012 season of the NiSWC. With so much on the line and Homestead’s reputation for limited overtaking opportunities, some feared the final race of the season was going to be filled with crashes.

And at times it appeared the race would never get going during the first quarter of the event as the caution flag flew early and often due to some aggressive driving. Even some of the most experienced drivers including Derek Wood and Brad Davies found trouble, seriously hampering their efforts to gain positions in the points. As the chaos unfolded behind him, Gorlinsky made all the right moves out front, mixing-up his restart points in order to keep the lead. Once he was out front, there was no touching him as he easily stretched the lead to nearly two seconds at some points.

King Dominates, Alfalla Crowned NiSWC Champion at PIR

Week 17 saw the drivers of the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) pay their annual visit to Phoenix International Raceway for the penultimate race of the season. It was apparent early in testing that this was going to be a wild and unpredictable race, but no one expected what happened Tuesday night. The race saw plenty of crashes and strategy, a first time winner  and the crowning of a worthy champion.

When the dust settled, it was not a series regular who took the checkered flag first. Instead, it was NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series driver Kevin King who not only had the car to beat for most of the race but played the strategy perfectly as well. The path to the front for King was not a walk in the park by any means though, as he benefited from a few fortunate breaks along the way.  Nor did Alfalla have an easy time of things in his efforts to wrap-up the 2011 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship.

Fittingly enough, the race started with the championship-leader on pole and 2010 champion Richard Towler on the outside of the front row. Crashes filled most the first third of the race as drivers jockeyed for position in the back of the field on a race track where clean overtaking opportunities were few and far between. Alfalla led the first 51 laps before Towler finally got past him on a restart.  The Englishman’s lead was short lived though as both sim racers headed for the pits when the yellow flew on Lap 62.

Alfalla Wins Texas, Closes in on Championship

With only three races remaining in the 2011 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship, (NiSWC) it is do or die time, especially for those still alive in the quest for the championship. Texas Motor Speedway played host to the sixteenth race of the season and saw one man rise above the rest. Championship leader Ray Alfalla passed polesitter Josh Parker for the lead on the race’s long green flag run and led nearly all the remaining laps for his third victory of the 2011 NiSWC season.

Early in the race, it appeared that it was Parker’s race to lose. He started on the pole and was quickly building a gap when a massive crash happened off of Turn Two on the second lap of the race. The wreck was sparked when Derek Wood made contact with Patrick Baldwin, sending Baldwin spinning in front of the back half of the field. The incident collected over a dozen cars including Brad Wright, Connor Mackenzie, Jameson Spies, and Pedro Mojica, all of whom were force to retire with crash damage just a handful of laps into the event.
